The city of Düsseldorf is not only located on the beautiful Rhine-River, but plays an important role in the financial world: some 180 national and international financial institutions and about 43 insurance companies are based here. Furthermore, one of the biggest German stock exchanges is located here.
In addition, Düsseldorf is widely known as a stronghold of the German advertising and fashion industry and in the last few years the city on the Rhine has become a top telecommunications center in Germany. There are 40 network service providers located in the capital of North-Rhine Westphalia. With two of the four big German providers of mobile frequencies, D2 Vodafone and E-Plus, Düsseldorf leads the German mobile phone market.
Düsseldorf is also at the heart of the Rhine region's biotechnology cluster, 'BioRiver.' and its area alone has 66 life science companies, plus a vast number of specialist suppliers and service providers. Renowned biotech players include Qiagen, Dynavax Europe/Rhein Biotech, Coley Pharmaceutical, Human Genome Sciences, Phenion, Monsanto, Bayer CropScience, Henkel and NewLab BioQuality.
Heinrich Heine University is famous for its research expertise and is Germany's most successful university when it comes to company start-ups in the field of biotechnology. Spin-offs from Heinrich Heine University account for 50 percent of turnover of all listed German biotech businesses.
